10/08: Lager visit in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf2 Düsseldorf

Here is a description of what we saw in the Lager we visited in Düsseldorf: Downstairs there were real kitchens, but upstairs there were empty rooms with nothing inside but 2 heating plates. Right next to the room was the bathroom, which wasn’t completely painted. We met a woman who shared a double bed with two young children. She expects her 3rd child in September, it will live in the same room. She told us she and her boys don’t leave her room the whole day because she doesn’t want problems with the other people.

The families we talked to were also crammed into small living spaces. A women from a Roma family living in this Lager said they are all afraid of being deported. She told us of another family who was put much pressure on to make them sign a statement that they were going to leave Germany “voluntarily” – she said the family was forced to sign this statement by the authorities. Some time later they were deported, in the middle of the night.
