Ankunft in Oberhausen

We had a nice welcome when we arrived in Oberhausen, with drummers and a pantomime and speeches by groups supporting our demands – and also one by the head of the city’s social affairs department. She said they want to help refugees find some rest in Oberhausen after what they have gone through; those city representatives never seem to have a look at the living conditions in the “Heims” in their cities.

Later we visited a part of the Lager in Bahnstraße where single women with their children are living in containers, one big room is partitioned into two. The women are not able to find rest here. Two women each with a small child, from different countries, are sharing the bigger room for sleeping, while they use the smaller one which includes the kitchen as the sitting room. They complained of sleepless nights because their children wake at different times, the children are also waking each other up. The circumstances of all the single women who are living here with their children are similar. One who is lucky to have the rooms only with her 7 years old son and has been living in this Lager for 7 years is being transferred to another Lager. There she and her son will then be provided with one small room. The woman is worried because she and her son will have to share the toilets and kitchen with other people in the other Lager, the space they have now will be taken away from them; also her son will have to change school.
