14/08 at the Pauluskirche in Dortmund

The most interesting thing about the Lager we visited in Dortmund (in Grevendiecksfeld) was that it is very far from the city centre, almost at the border to the city of Bochum, although next to other residential apartments, and that there is an enormous fence isolating the apartments where the refugees are living.

The concert took place at the Pauluskirche and there was also an afternoon programme: African Tide e.V. prepared a meal for us and after that two discussion groups were held, one with other women and one on underage refugees. Most of the refugee women participating in the women’s meeting were very young, often still under age, so that the conversation turned to education and school. All the young women said they are happy to be are allowed to go to school, even though one said that the classes were not so great and that it was difficult to learn German there; she thought they could be better. They also said they think it wrong that women asylum seekers who are of age – and sometimes only a little older than they are – are not allowed to go to school or continue their education and that they don’t even have the right to attend a language course to learn German. There were also other women, for example from African Tide and VDMO (association of migrants’ organisations in Dortmund), so that we had a lively exchange.

Here are some impressions of the afternoon meeting and of the concert in the evening:
